Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennadiy Golovkin 3 prediction, picks, props, odds: Best bets from boxing expert who’s 34-9

Perhaps boxing’s most compelling rivalry over the past decade will renew Saturday for a third time when Gennadiy Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez collide in a long-awaited trilogy showdown. Their 12-round main event will anchor the boxing card from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The pay-per-view main Canelo vs. GGG fight card is set for 8 p.m. ET. Alvarez is putting his four major super middleweight belts on the line in this matchup, which has been four years in the making. Golovkin, who remains the middleweight champion, and Alvarez fought to an action-packed draw in September 2017, followed by Alvarez edging out a majority decision in the rematch a year later.

Caesars Sportsbook lists Alvarez as a -500 favorite (risk $500 to win $100), while Golovkin comes back at +380 in the latest Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennadiy Golovkin 3 odds. The over/under for total rounds is set at 10.5 with the over favored at -225 and the under fetching a price of +175. Before locking in any Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennadiy Golovkin III picks, make sure you see the boxing predictions and betting advice from SportsLine expert Peter Kahn.

A three-time Boxing Writers Association of America Cus D’Amato Manager of the Year nominee, Kahn has his finger on the pulse of what’s going on inside and outside the ring. As one of boxing’s most influential managers, Kahn has guided numerous world champions and currently sports a roster of 15 fighters. His company, Fight Game Advisors, manages former undisputed lightweight champion George Kambosos Jr., current female undisputed super middleweight champ Franchón Crews-Dezurn and rising junior middleweight star Xander Zayas.

Kahn is an astounding 34-9 picking fights for SportsLine since boxing returned following the pandemic-induced hiatus, netting a profit of $3,972. His notable wins include telling SportsLine members in February of last year that his strongest play on the Canelo (-4000) vs. Avni Yildirim (+1500) fight was to take the favorite by stoppage in the third round at 5/1 odds. Alvarez delivered, and those who followed the play made $500 for every $100 wagered. Anyone who has followed Wise’s combat sports picks is way up.

Now, with Canelo vs. Golovkin III in sight, Kahn has studied Canelo vs. GGG from every angle and identified the best value in the boxing odds. You can only see his confident prop bets and money-line picks at SportsLine.

Canelo Alvarez vs. GGG preview

Alvarez (57-2-2, 39 KO) has long maintained that every fight he takes is built around cementing his legacy as one of the greatest to ever lace up the gloves. He repeatedly told the media this week that he’s “the best fighter in the world” and is out to reclaim that status Saturday.

Alvarez likely remains the sport’s biggest star but his standing among today’s great fighters has slipped a little following his relatively lopsided loss to Dmitry Bivol for the light heavyweight title in May. For instance, Ring Magazine, which is widely considered the media authority on the sport, dropped Alvarez from the top spot to No. 5 in its coveted pound-for-pound rankings.

Alvarez said he intends to make a statement in the final chapter of his trilogy with Golovkin. Although he’s aware that Golovkin’s age and fading skill set are why sportsbooks have Alvarez as a sizable favorite, the super middleweight champed vowed to not overlook his opponent.

“Out of our rivalry, this one will be the most important, and also the fact that he’s going into this fight thinking it’s going to be his last makes him more dangerous,” Alvarez said. “As for myself, I’m going to leave everything in the ring for this fight. Obviously, I go into every fight with that objective, and this is no exception.”

Early in 2019, Golovkin (42-1-1, 37 KOs) hired Johnathan Banks to take over duties as the lead trainer as the boxer entered the twilight of his career. At the time, Golovkin cited Banks’ successful track record and connections to greatness as the reasons for the move, which came soon after his narrow loss to Alvarez in the rematch.

Banks is a former professional boxer who trained under and learned from famed icon Emmanuel Steward at the Kronk Gym in Detroit. He started as an assistant trainer but took over lead duties for former heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko following Steward’s passing in 2012 and remained in that role until Klitschko retired in 2017.

Golovkin was a fan of both Steward and Klitschko and liked what he saw from Banks. Golovkin is 4-0 with Banks, and the trainer said this week he isn’t buying into the idea that his fighter is now too old to compete with a prime Alvarez.

“A lot of people underestimate fighters who live a healthy lifestyle and take care of themselves,” Bans said. “Golovkin is in great shape. We’ll just need to pick up the pace in this fight at the start and we’ll be fine.” See who Kahn is backing right here.
